I've been meaning to post...

...but I've just been so busy. Busy doing nothing even remotely postworthy. That will change, however, for next week my driving lessons will resume, a full year since my last official lesson. My former driving instructor, Lino, has abandoned me, putting his own safety and security ahead of my need to swerve. Honestly, the nerve of that guy. Anyway, a brave new instructor will soon be sliding into the passenger seat of harm's way. Stay tuned, and stay off the sidewalks.

Good luck, Jen.

And if you see Lino crossing the street, floor the pedal! That'll teach him a lesson.

Oh Calamity, It's never to late to learn.

So there may be a few less pedestrians in the world. There's too many anyway. Always crossing in front of us.

You learn how to drive and ignore everyone else!

Rerain from hitting animate and inanimate objects, stay between the lines, stop when you're supposed to, and you too shall drive forth!

No one in the United States understands why I don't know how to drive. When I tell them it's because I grew up in a big city, they just get blank looks. If they'd grown up with TTC and GO Train service, and had known that parking in downtown Toronto was $5 per half hour, they wouldn't know how to drive, either!

Thank you, Leigh-Ann -- well said. I'm a reluctant driver, to put it mildly. You can't beat the price of public transit, and by the sounds of it driving is at least as frustrating as waiting for a bus.

One thing I hate about living in the US is a lack of sidewalks. I've lived in Albuquerque, San Francisco, Orange county, and Las Vegas, and SF was the only one with decent sidewalks. Both SF and Abq had decent public transportation, but only San Francisco's was anything like Toronto's. Here in Vegas, the only people who ride the bus are the people you don't want to know, if you catch my drift. In Canada I walked everywhere, even making a 5 mile roundtrip walk every weekday to my radio job in Oshawa. I enjoyed walking, and I miss it.

I've wanted to learn how to drive, but now I'm 41, and I'll admit I'm a nervous driver. So many drivers here are drunk (because of the free booze available all day and night at casinos), and the driving is the worst of all the cities I've lived in. However, I wish I had more mobility here, and public transportation can't help with that. We don't even have an Amtrak station! I want to see the Grand Canyon, drive up to Best Friends in Utah, make the 3 hr. trip to California to take in a hockey game, etc., and because I can't drive, I can't do those things. My partner, Nancy, does drive, but she's got some back problems which make long drives uncomfortable for her, and she's just not into "driving for fun". I'd hate to ask her to chauffeur me on a 3 hour drive to a place that only I want to go... it's not fair.

I also want to move someday, and have a hobby farm in mind. I want the isolation of the country (or the wilderness), but still want to know that there's a Starbucks within 50 miles. For me to live that way, I'm going to have to learn to drive... I may not always have a girlfriend/slave.

Are you taking special driving lessions, like, "Driving for the older, totally freaked out driver"? Maybe you can inspire me :)

Sadly, I chose the "Young Drivers of Canada" route. (My mother reacted to the news with, "But you're not young!") Apparently the instructors do see a fair number of older, terrified drivers like myself. Don't take me as inspiration until I pass at least one road test. Next week I'm doing highway driving for the first time, and I'm afraid that I'm going to stop the car in the middle lane and get out, insisting that my instructor take the wheel.

I'm not a Starbucks addict, as I don't drink coffee, but I know what you mean about needing to have certain things nearby.
